Low-iodine diet

To ensure the effectiveness of the treatment, we recommend a well balanced diet that is low in iodine. Therefore, for two weeks before your appointment please follow the advice given below.

Foods

  • Do eat fresh meat, vegetables, fresh fruit, pasta and rice.  These are low in iodine. When preparing food, ensure you use fresh/dried herbs, and salt-free spices. Oils and vinegars  are also permissible
  • Do not eat foods artificially coloured pink or red such as glace cherries, canned strawberries, spam, salami, certain pastries and sweets. The colouring material E127 is rich in iodine so look at the labels when buying food. Foods coloured by spices are allowed
  • Do not use iodised table salt or sea salt as these contain iodine
  • Do not eat fish, kelp and all seafood

Self-medication

  • Do not take cough medicine
  • Do not take vitamin supplements which contain iodine

Skin and hair

  • Avoid skin antiseptic preparations containing iodine
  • Avoid Henna hair dye
