Using Electro-phyical agents as part of physiotherapy

The term ‘electro-physical agents’ is given to a wide range of electrical and physical therapeutic modalities regularly used by physiotherapists such as:

  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
  • Ice
  • Wax
  • Infrared radiation
  • Therapeutic ultrasound
  • Low level laser
  • Hydrocollator heat packs
  • Interferential therapy
  • Neuromuscular electrical stimulation and many more

Electro-physical agents can be used effectively for:

  • Pain relief i.e. low back pain
  • Tissue repair in acute ligament, tendon and muscle injuries
  • Reduction of swelling and haematomas
  • Relief of muscle spasm
  • Reduction of scar tissue
  • Stimulation of denervated and weak muscles
  • Temporo-mandibular joint pain and dysfunction
