ISOKINETIC ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT USING THE BIODEX

Isokinetic assessment and treatment involves exercising using apparatus that provides variable resistance to a movement, thereby allowing the effort of the patient to be monitored.

The Biodex is a computerised system used for testing strength and for rehabilitation, usually of the knee but can be used for the shoulder, wrist, elbow or ankle.

Testing will show where the strength deficit lies and at what speed.

For example, with a footballer it might show weakness at a fast speed mid-range, such as when kicking a ball, but with an elderly patient it might show weakness at a slow speed inner-range like getting out of a chair.

The biodex can be used to rehabilitate the following conditions:

  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Patella tendonitis (Jumper's knee)
  • Lateral epicondylitis (Tennis elbow)
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Patello-femoral Dysfunction
  • Sports rehabilitation
  • ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) deficiency
