Robotic Party At The London Clinic

30 November 2006

The Clinic celebrates its 100th robotic surgery case

Patients, leading consultants, healthcare professionals and staff gathered together at The London Clinic for celebrations to mark the 100th patient to successfully undergo treatment for prostate cancer with the world-renowned da Vinci® Surgical System. The evening’s celebrations were opened by the Clinic’s Chairman, Mr Michael Abrahams, who addressed guests with a speech extolling the Clinic’s introduction of this new cutting-edge technology.

Professor Roger Kirby and Mr Justin Vale, two of the eminent consultants who have pioneered surgery with the robot at the Clinic, also spoke about the robot’s ‘journey’ from extensive consultant training in America to the technology’s arrival at The London Clinic in November 2005. The consultants praised the hard work and expertise of fellow colleagues in setting up the pioneering service and extended their best wishes to all ‘robotic patients’ at the Clinic.

One of only five robots currently available in the UK, the Clinic’s da Vinci® Surgical System has been instrumental in the treatment of over 100 patients to date at the Clinic who have benefited from the minimally invasive procedure. The progressive technology used by the robot has many advantages for patients over open-surgery including less post-operative discomfort, less blood loss, faster recovery and a shorter stay in hospital. Recent studies also suggest that the da Vinci® technology may reduce the risk of incontinence and erectile dysfunction following surgery.

The evening gave patients the opportunity to meet other people who have been through the robotic ‘experience’. Warren Benbow said: “I was thrilled to be invited to the evening’s celebrations. Following my operation in December 2005, I have made a fantastic recovery thanks to the expertise and care I have received at the Clinic. It is wonderful to be able to meet other patients who have chosen to be treated with this pioneering technology and to share a glass of champagne with my fellow survivors.”
