Choosing your consultant

When you are choosing the consultant you see, there are a number of things to consider before making your decision.  Often your GP will help to guide you to a consultant with the specialist expertise to treat your condition but there are also some tips to help you make your choice:

• Check your consultant is properly trained, qualified and experienced – the General Medical Council has a list of all qualified consultants and those who appear on the Specialist Register.  This register shows that a consultant has specialised in his or her chosen field and has the experience necessary to treat your condition.
• Research your consultant on the internet – find out about their training, qualifications and experience.  Leading consultants at The London Clinic usually also practice in the NHS, often hold teaching posts and submit papers to medical journals.
• Ask your GP for advice – if you have researched a consultant and would like your GP’s opinion, they should be able to give you support in your decision making.
