PROFESSIONAL PROFILE

Dr Alastair O’Brien is a Clinical Senior Lecturer and Consultant Hepatologist at University College London and The Royal Free Hospitals. His research in infection and liver disease has been published in the most prestigious medical Journals such as The Lancet, Nature Medicine, Hepatology and Gastroenterology.

He currently holds approximately £2million in grant funding from the Wellcome Trust, The Medical Research Council and The Department of Health. He is able to combine clinical excellence with running a laboratory research group and a clinical trial team. 

He is the chief investigator for ATTIRE which will be the largest interventional study ever performed in patients with acute decompensation of cirrhosis taking place at more than 20 sites over the next three years.

He is also the associate editor for the British Medical Journal open Gastroenterology and has written the hepatology chapter for the best-selling medical textbook Kumar and Clarke’s Clinical Medicine, 9th Edition. Dr O’Brien is a great advocate of patient choice and believes that empathy and listening to people are a doctor’s most important duties.
