Special interests

Our Consultants are specialists in blood disorders such as leukaemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) and myeloproliferative disorders, lymphoma and myeloma. We can provide all of the most effective modalities of treatment, including the latest developments in chemotherapy and stem cell transplant procedures.

We have a close association with the Anthony Nolan Trust and we are a major stem cell collection centre for peripheral blood stem cell collections (PBSC) and bone marrow harvest volunteer donors.

The team is supported by many specialist nurses who are an essential part of the overall services available to patients.

In addition to the bone marrow transplantation services, our doctors routinely see patients for:

  • investigation (including bone marrow biopsy if indicated) and treatment of anaemias, including thalassaemia
  • provision of second opinion
  • investigation and treatment of haemochromatosis (iron overload)
  • provision of bone marrow biopsy services
  • Investigation and management of thromboembolism, including consultant delivered warfarin dosing
  • investigation of unexplained bleeding

Stem Cell Transplantation Unit

The Stem Cell Unit is an eight-bed purpose-built transplant facility featuring rooms with HEPA filtration and positive pressure ventilation. This enables us to treat patients with haematological malignancies or other serious blood disorders who require special facilities because of their compromised immune systems. The Unit is staffed by specialist nurses with specific training caring for such patients.

The Haematology Unit is supported by the Stem Cell Laboratory with facilities for flow cytometry and cryopreservation. A liquid nitrogen facility is used for the long-term storage of patients' stem cells.
