His post graduate otolaryngology speciality training included registrar training both in London and Seattle and after completing his specialist training he was appointed as a fellow in facial plastic surgery in Portland, Oregon. USA.
He was subsequenly appointed as Consultant ENT surgeon at the Royal Free Hospital London in 1984. He then became lead thyroid and parathyroid surgeon at the Royal Free.
Michael Stearns is an examiner for the Intercollegiate examination in Otolaryngology which is the end of training examination for trainees in otolaryngology.
He is a director of professional affairs for the Royal College of Surgeons.
His current clinical interests are general ENT (adults and children), thyroid and parathyroid disease, sinus disease, rhinoplasty, tinnitus, vertigo and hearing loss.
