Professional profile

Donald studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1995, completing his specialist vascular training in Edinburgh, Leicester and Adelaide.

In 2002, he was awarded his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree by the University of Edinburgh for research on blood coagulation in aortic aneurysm surgery.

Appointed as Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon in 2004, he established the complex fenestrated and branched endovascular aortic programme in Birmingham which is now the largest in the UK and one of the largest in Europe.

He is a member of the Birmingham Complex Aortic Team and works with cardiac aortic surgeons, radiologists and adult congenital cardiologists to manage patients with diseases of the entire aorta from the aortic valve to the iliac bifurcation.

His area of clinical expertise is in the management of aortic aneurysms and he specialises in endovascular repair of complex abdominal, thoraco-abdominal and aortic arch aneurysms using fenestrated, thoraco-abdominal branch, arch branch, chimney and surgeon-modified fenestrated devices.

He also has an interest in endovascular repair of aorto-iliac occlusive disease using stent-grafts.

He has been a mentor for fenestrated and thoraco-abdominal branch endografts since 2009 and has visited 25 UK and European vascular units to train surgeons and radiologists in these advanced techniques.
